Skin Needling
Understanding Skin Needling
Firm, resilient skin is supported by healthy levels of collagen and elastin. As these naturally decline over time, the skin can become less firm and refined, leading to visible changes such as fine lines, uneven texture and reduced elasticity. However, the skin has a natural ability to repair and regenerate, producing new collagen to support firmness, strength and a smoother, more refined appearance.
Skin needling works with the skinβs natural regenerative ability to stimulate fresh collagen and support overall skin renewal. At Skin Therapy, we use the Dermapen 4, an advanced microneedling device designed to create precise, controlled micro channels within the skin. This process is particularly beneficial for acne scarring, helping to remodel damaged tissue and improve uneven texture over time. It also supports healthy cell turnover, which can help improve the appearance of pigmentation and uneven skin tone. By stimulating new collagen formation, the skin can gradually appear smoother, firmer and more refined, while also improving concerns such as enlarged pores and fine lines.
What Can Skin Needling Improve?
By supporting collagen renewal and healthy cell turnover, skin needling can progressively refine the skinβs texture, tone and overall quality while targeting a range of common skin concerns.
Skin needling is designed to target:
- Acne scarring
- Uneven skin texture
- Enlarged pores
- Fine lines
- Loss of firmness
- Pigmentation and uneven skin tone
- Overall skin quality
A refined treatment designed to enhance collagen renewal, improve skin texture and support a firmer, smoother and more rejuvenated appearance.
Considerations
Treatment may need to be postponed or avoided in the following circumstances:
- Certain medications that may affect skin sensitivity or healing
- Active skin infections
- Open wounds or broken skin
- Recent sunburn or significant skin irritation
- Active cold sores
What Will the Treatment Feel Like?
Using advanced Dermapen 4 technology, the device moves smoothly across the skin with minimal drag, helping create a more comfortable and controlled treatment experience. The sensation is generally very tolerable, with only mild sensitivity in certain areas.
Following your skin needling treatment, a Dermapen recovery mask is applied to deeply hydrate, soothe and calm the skin while helping to reduce post-treatment inflammation and support the recovery process.
Your treatment is then completed with LED Light Therapy, helping to further calm the skin, support healing and enhance recovery following needling.
Are There Any Safety Considerations?
Temporary redness and sensitivity may occur as part of the skinβs normal response. Following the recommended aftercare is essential to support recovery and minimise the risk of irritation, infection or other complications.
Please advise us of any current medications, skin conditions or recent treatments prior to your appointment.
Your Skinβs Recovery Process
Following treatment, the skin may appear flushed and feel slightly sensitive for the first 24β48 hours. As the skin moves through its natural renewal process, mild dryness or light flaking may occur before gradually settling.
Over the days that follow, the complexion begins to feel smoother and more refined, while collagen renewal continues beneath the surface, supporting progressive improvements in texture, firmness and overall skin quality.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments recommended will depend on your individual skin concerns, goals and overall skin condition. A course of treatments is often recommended, with sessions typically spaced around 4 weeks apart.
Once your desired skin goals have been achieved, maintenance treatments every 3β6 months may be recommended to help support collagen renewal and maintain your results over time.
Treatment Preparation & Aftercare
Preparing the skin correctly before treatment helps reduce sensitivity, minimise the risk of irritation and ensure the skin is in the best possible condition for a safe and effective treatment.
To ensure the skin is in the best condition for treatment:
- Avoid retinol, Vitamin A derivatives and other active skincare ingredients for 7 days prior to treatment.
- Avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds and fake tan for 2 weeks prior to treatment to ensure the skin is not sensitised or compromised before your appointment.
- Avoid threading for 5β7 days prior, and waxing or laser hair removal for 1β2 weeks prior to treatment to minimise sensitivity and allow the skin time to settle.
- Please reschedule your appointment if you have an active cold sore, open wounds, broken skin or an active skin infection in the treatment area.
- Please advise us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding prior to booking, as treatment suitability will need to be assessed before proceeding.
- Please arrive with no makeup or fake tan applied to the treatment area, allowing the skin to be properly assessed and prepared before treatment.
After your treatment
Immediately after your skin needling treatment, we apply a Dermapen recovery mask followed by LED Light Therapy to help calm the skin, reduce post treatment inflammation and support the recovery process.
We provide you with an aftercare product to nourish, protect and support your skin for up to one week following your treatment.
We strongly advise following the recommended aftercare protocol, as the skin is more vulnerable following treatment and requires extra care to minimise the risk of irritation and infection.
- Avoid sun exposure, swimming, exercise and makeup for 48 hours.
- Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms and excessive heat for 48 hours.
- Keep the treated area clean and avoid unnecessary touching for 48 hours.
- Wash the treated area with cold water 2 hours after your treatment, followed by the provided aftercare. Continue using the aftercare for the next 6 days, up to 3 times daily as needed.
- Avoid retinol, vitamin A, exfoliants and other active skincare for 48 hours.
- Apply SPF daily and protect the skin from direct sun exposure.
- Use a fresh pillowcase following your treatment.
